  1. In ecology, the maximum number of animals of
  2. a given species that a particular area can
  3. support. When the carrying capacity is
  4. exceeded, there is insufficient food (or
  5. other resources) for the members of the
  6. population. The population may then be
  7. reduced by emigration, reproductive failure,
  8. or death through starvation.
  9.
